Revise Hero Essay

Students - DUE Thurs Oct 11th  or Friday Oct 12th

Please log into Myaccess.com* and edit/revise your Definition of a Hero essay.  The edited/revised version should fix the following errors:
Editing
1. Spelling
2. Grammar (especially Sub/Verb agreement)
3.  No contractions
4. No 2nd person pronouns (you, your, yours)
5.  No use of the word "Reason(s)"
Revising
1. Intro paragraph must include a thesis sentence  
2. Length must be 5 paragraphs
3.  Must answer prompt / be on topic

If the following steps are followed (and time and care are taken) no revised essay should earn below a 4.0 holistic score.

DEADLINE UPDATE

OMM Portfolio deadline has been moved to October 15 (bl 4) and 16 (bl 1, 5).   All work must be turned in on those days.

Vocabulary Document for OMM Portfolio

The Google Document for the vocabulary portion of the Of Mice and Men Portfolio has now been shared with every student via their G-Star email.  Any one who did not receive the document should see me immediately for troubleshooting.

Of Mice and Men Project

DUE - OCT 11 / 12

For the Of Mice and Men final project, students will turn in a portfolio of all work related to the reading of the novel.   Portfolios will include:

1.  All notes - typed up and in MLA format.
2.  1 300-500 word personal reflection on either a specific character/event or the plot as a whole. Must be
         in MLA format and adhere to standard rules of grammar.
3.  1 creative/artistic component - students will receive a list of acceptable options in class.
4.  1 essay to be drafted in class on the topic of Curley's Wife.  Portfolio must contain the final, revised 
          version of this essay.  Must be in MLA format.
5.  1 vocabulary chart containing 10 words from the novel.  Students will be provided with the template    
          for the chart in Google Docs.
6.  1 cover page with a Title, Student Name, Teacher Name, Class Info, and Date.
7.  1 porfolio checklist - completed.

Students will be provided with a checklist to keep tract of task completion and mastery of objectives.

**Portfolio will show evidence of the following Common Core ELA benchmarks:

  * CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.           
  * CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.9-10.2 Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.
 *  CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.9-10.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
 *  CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.9-10.2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
 *  CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.9-10.4 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grades 9–10 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.
 * CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.

Researching Steinbeck

In preparation for our reading of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, all students must research 5 facts on the author.  Students are encouraged to find interesting and lesser-known facts that will impress Mr. Snow. 

Guidelines:
1. may be typed or hand written
2.  must include citation of source(s)
3. NO Wikipedia  (I love it, but not for this assignment.)

Assignment is due 9/10 for odd classes and 9/11 for even classes

Vocabulary Packets 1 + 2

Students have received Vocabulary Packets 1 + 2.  These packets are designed to increase student knowledge of / familiarity with challenging vocab, parts of speech, recognizable suffixes and prefixes, and derivatives.

**Students MUST  identify the part-of-speech for the missing word under the "Write The Derivative" portion.


Packet 1 - DUE 9/6 and 9/7
Packet 2 - DUE 9/12 and 9/13

Students will be tested on these 20 words on 9/14 and 9/17 respectively.

Students will set up a SCHOOL ONLY G-Mail account.

GMail will be the primary means of student to teacher and student to student communication in this year's course. Mastering this platform and using it effectively and appropriately will have many benefits in both college and career.

  • Your GMail user name must be set up in EXACTLY this format:

    • GMail addresses not in the requested format will not be accepted as a contact by Mr. Snow.
  • You will then email Mr.Snow (snow.gstar.la@gmail.com) to confirm the set-up of your GMail and so that Mr. Snow can add you as a contact
